- Using a cell phone while driving increases the risk of causing an accident by 23 times.
- Texting or talking on the phone distracts the driver's attention from the road, leading to a deterioration of the driver's awareness of reality.
- When the eyes are fixed on a phone screen or scribbling on the phone this causes visual and cognitive distraction, which significantly affects the operator's ability to detect and react to threats/dangers in a timely manner.
- Looking at a message on your phone in your car takes at least five seconds. And if you're running 40 to 45 KM (25 or 30 miles) at speed, you've covered a distance equal to half a football field without looking at the road. You won't see a car or motorcycle break down in front of you, or a roundabout you approach or even a pedestrian.
- Studies have shown that using a cell phone while driving negatively affects the ability to maintain the car in lane lines, maintain the correct speed and also reduces the ability to calculate distance.
- You distract yourself; visually, manually and mentally.
- Traffic laws state that it is illegal for the driver of a car to carry a cell phone in his hand, whether to make a call, send a message, change music, or look up an address via GPS. It is NOT allowed to have the phone in hand while driving (Art. 7a Landsbesluit Verkeersregel AB 1999). If you are caught with a phone in your hand while driving, you can be fined up to Awg. 10,000,- or a maximum sentence of 3 months.
