Benefits of Using a Seat Belt

Seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce traffic injuries among adults and youth that is old enough to wear a seat belt.

The roads are full of unexpected twists and turns, and it cannot predicted when danger is approaching. That's when your seat belt becomes your lifeline.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT?

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), seat belts reduce the risk of death by approximately 45%. That is like having a shield that protects you from harm almost half the time that dangerous situations present themselves on the road in front of you.
  • Seat belts reduce the risk of serious injury by about 50% according to (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Global figures indicate that 50% of those who lost their lives in traffic were not wearing seat belts at the time of impact (The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • Seat belt for the person sitting in the back. We often focus on wearing seat belts when we sit in the front, whether it's the driver or the passenger sitting in the front, but wearing seat belts in the back is also important.

In the event of an accident, if a rear-seat person is not wearing their seat belt, their body may be ejected from the car but also pushed into the front seat with great force and cause serious injury or even death to the person sitting in front.

According to Aruba's traffic law, it is mandatory for the driver of the car to wear his seatbelt, the person sitting next to the driver, and children under 12 years of age to sit in the back (Art. 45 lid 1 t/m 3 Landsbesluit Verkeersregel AB 1999 no. 39).
